It wasn’t just another partisan soundbite—it was a reflection of something millions of users have quietly noticed: online platforms don’t just mirror our divisions; they deepen them.

Discussions on Reddit’s r/technology echo this concern, with users across the political spectrum acknowledging that social media algorithms increasingly steer us toward outrage rather than understanding. The consensus is clear—what we see online is less a reflection of who we are and more a product of what keeps us scrolling.

The Engagement Trap: Why Outrage Pays

Social media platforms are built around one core metric—engagement. Every like, share, and comment signals to the algorithm that a piece of content is “working.” But what drives engagement isn’t nuance—it’s emotion. Anger, shock, and indignation are powerful triggers that keep users glued to their screens.

This progression—sometimes called algorithmic radicalization—happens quietly. It doesn’t require intent or ideology on the user’s part. Instead, it’s the byproduct of personalization systems that feed us more of what triggers us most, tightening the walls of our information bubbles. These algorithmic recommendations can intensify divisiveness by repeatedly exposing users to emotionally charged or one-sided content.

The Profit and Power Equation

Underlying all of this is a simple economic incentive: more engagement means more revenue. Each additional second we spend scrolling translates into more ads served. From a business perspective, polarization isn’t a flaw—it’s a feature that drives profit.

But financial motives aren’t the only concern. Experts and investigative reports have documented how foreign disinformation networks exploit these same engagement-driven systems to manipulate public opinion. The more emotionally reactive a user base becomes, the easier it is to steer conversations, spread falsehoods, and erode trust in institutions.
